Wayne State College, The Neihardt Trust and the Neihardt Foundation announce the first annual Circle of Neihardt Juried Contest. The Circle of Neihardt honors the memory of John G. Neihardt (1881-1973) - poet, writer, journalist, professor. During his lifetime, Neihardt received many honors, among them being named Poet Laureate of Nebraska and Prairie Poet of America.
The Circle of Neihardt College Level Contest is a tremendous opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in a contest that not only offers cash awards and the opportunity to present their work, but the winning entry will be published in The Great Plains Quarterly, an academic journal published by The Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The high school contest presents an opportunity for high school students to enter a contest with a cash award, an opportunity to present the winning entry at the annual Neihardt Spring Conference and to have it published in the annual Neihardt Journal.
Each year the contest theme and artistic medium will be announced including writing, poetry, music, painting, sculpture, performing arts and new media. The theme will be taken from some aspect of the works of John Neihardt. We would like to invite aspiring undergraduate college/university students and high school students to participate in the annual juried contest.
